Junior Sister/Charge Nurse - Department: Ward 23, Surgery

Band:  6    pro-rata if part-time

Hours: 37.5 hours per week, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working

Ward 23 is a 40 bedded surgical ward at Milton Keynes University hospital specialising in Trauma, Orthopaedics and ENT.  We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated individual, who would like to develop their leadership skills to join our supportive team.

We work closely with the multidisciplinary team to provide high-quality care to our patients. Our team support patients recovering from a range of surgeries to help them regain their independence through the care we give. Our diverse group of patients include those recovering from Trauma, Orthopaedics, ear nose and throat and general surgery.

We are looking for Junior Sister/Charge Nurse to join our team and grab the opportunity to learn and develop your nursing and leadership skills.

We offer support to all new staff starting with the Trust induction, networks for preceptorship, mentorship and ongoing support with practice development. Our practice education team encourage and facilitate bespoke courses and in-house training continuously throughout employment at MKUH.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide effective, professional and managerial leadership to staff.
  • To provide and maintain a high standard of nursing care.
  • To supervise and develop the knowledge and skills of junior staff.
  • To initiate/ facilitate developments in nursing in partnership with the ward manager.
  • To be the ward representative in the absence of the ward manager.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To assess, plan, implement and evaluate care of patients, incorporating the standards and philosophy of the ward and evidence-based research.
  • Organise method of care delivery within the ward/department, allocating, prioritising and delegating effectively. This includes responding to capacity and patient dependency requirements.
  • Maximise opportunities for health promotion and education
  • To act as a resource person to others providing information to junior staff, multidisciplinary team (MDT) members, patients and relatives.
